Programs that offer a review of options and assistance to people who want to provide for the administration and/or protection of their assets during their lifetime, develop a plan for managing their finances in the event of a disabling illness, prepare binding instructions for the health care they wish to receive or avoid should they become terminally ill, make arrangements for the disposition of their assets with a minimum amount of taxation upon their death and provide for the administration of their estate should their spouse or other beneficiaries be incapable of managing their affairs. Estate planning provides an opportunity for individuals to make their wishes known and to name the person(s) who will be responsible for carrying out those directives. Tools available during the estate planning process include a Last Will and Testament, durable power of attorney for health care, durable financial power of attorney and a directive to physicians such as a living will, natural death directive or other state-recognized document. A revocable living trust may also be appropriate in some circumstances.

Like most legal organizations around Virginia and the US, LSNV was motivated to expand its work toward racial equity in a concrete way during the summer of 2020 after observing the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, which further underscored the racial inequity that exists throughout American society. In June 2020, the Supreme Court of Virginia called on all members of the bar to join together to ensure that “all people are treated equally and fairly and with dignity under the law.” LSNV believes that we cannot advocate for equal justice if we ignore the pervasive inequities that are often insurmountable barriers to advancement. In the face of historic and systemic inequities, we must speak out and lead in order to ensure change. To that end, LSNV has compiled some materials to help everyone learn and grow into legal professionals and citizens who can actively fight against injustice on the basis of race.

Calvary Counseling Center is a welcoming and innovative organization that endeavors to service and support those with mental health and substance abuse challenges. We provide outpatient programs specifically tailored to help individuals facing mental health and substance abuse issues. Our offerings include justice involved services, assessments, and group therapy as well as connecting clients with additional support resources. LGBT Life Center is a trusted leader that empowers the LGBTQ communities and all people affected by HIV through improving health and wellness, strengthening families and communities, and providing transformative education and advocacy. We offer free HIV & STI testing services, housing services, medical services, case management, social support programming for the LGBTQ+ community, youth programming, senior programming, PrEP and HIV prevention services, mental health and counseling, and intimate partner violence crisis intervention. Education, support and advocacy for all people impacted by interpersonal violence. Services are provided remotely via Zoom and telephone or in person dependent on the need. Services are available in Spanish

Programs that provide assistance for people who want to draft a living will, also sometimes known as a personal directive, which describes in writing the forms of treatment individuals wish to receive or avoid at the end of their lives and the circumstances under which health care professionals should withhold or remove artificial life support or refrain from using heroic measures if the person is unable to provide informed consent due to incapacitation. The conditions in a living will take effect when the individual is in an irreversible condition and is not expected to survive, e.g., if they are in the last stages of a terminal illness, a coma or persistive vegetative state. Included are programs that provide copies of the necessary form as well as those that help people complete them. Not all states recognize the validity of living wills, but all have some mechanism such as a durable power attorney for health care which achieves the same objective.

The Legal Aid Justice Center offers free legal services to low-income families in the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg and the counties of Charles City, Dinwiddie, Prince George and Surry. We serve at risk children, low-wage immigrant workers, institutionalized persons, and other vulnerable populations through individual legal representation in civil actions, community education and organizing and statewide advocacy.
