Dental Care

We provide free basic dental services for adults by appointment only. Basic dental care is provided by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Howard University fourth-year dental students under the supervision of volunteer local dentists. Basic dental care includes restoration (fillings), extractions, x-rays, and examination. Dental hygiene services are provided by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) dental hygiene students under the supervision of volunteer local dentists.

Person Centered Therapy

The Free Clinic of Central Virginia serves low-income (200% of the federal poverty level or lower) persons without health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid for the service being requested and provided. Present figures indicate that over 70% of the patients are working at least one part-time job or more. At least one-third of the Free Clinic patients have been identified with chronic illnesses (i.e. asthma, diabetes, hypertension), which necessitate ongoing medical care and medications. Specialty medical services are available in 20 different areas. A Medication Accesss Program, which is called MedsHelp, provides prescription services to Free Clinic patients as well to patients referred by physicians in the Central Virginia community. A dental clinic for exams, dental hygiene services, restorations, and extractions treated 2,034 unduplicated patients in over 5,200 visits in 2011. Some dental specialty services have been added, but they are only provided to long term patients at this time.

Operating for 40+ years, Southeastern Virginia Health System (SEVHS) is the premier community-based health care initiative in Hampton Roads for the insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The 501(c)3 operates twelve sites, providing primary care and dental services to individuals and families. SEVHS physicians are board-certified and provide services in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology. With practices located in Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Franklin, SEVHS also offers a number of other support services such as health education and nutrition counseling, case management, referrals to specialty care, medication assistance and on-site lab testing. Southeastern Virginia Health System is a member of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and the Virginia Community Healthcare Association (VACHA). SEVHS services over 25,000 patients annually.

Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services

Programs that provide preventive, diagnostic and treatment services in a variety of community and hospital-based settings to help people achieve, maintain and enhance a state of emotional well-being, personal empowerment and the skills to cope with everyday demands without excessive stress or reliance on alcohol or other drugs. Treatment may include emotional support, introspection and problem-solving assistance using a variety of modalities and approaches, and medication, as needed, for individuals who have a substance use disorder involving alcohol and/or other drugs or for people who range from experiencing difficult life transitions or problems in coping with daily living to those with severe, chronic mental illnesses that seriously impact their lives.

Tidewater Psychotherapy Services is a multidisciplinary mental health practice where adult psychiatrists and medical consultants providing psychiatrist medicines, child and adult psychologists, social workers, and licensed professional counselors provide a wide range of services to individuals, families and groups. Treatment is provided for patients of all ages, and services include individual, family and marital therapy, medication management, and groups in specialty areas such as substance abuse.
